When should you seek Emergency Dental Treatment?

1. Knocked-Out Tooth

If, by accident or naturally, one or many of your teeth have been knocked out, you can seek emergency dental treatment. The knocked-out tooth can be re-implanted without having to put fake ones if done by a professional dentist immediately.

2. Lost Dental Crown or Filling

In rare cases when a dental crown or filling comes out loose, you can seek emergency dental treatment. This is because prompt dental care is necessary to prevent further damage or infection.

3. Severe Gum Bleeding

In another case, if you’re experiencing uncontrolled bleeding from your gums, you should seek emergency dental treatment. This could be a sign of gum disease or other oral health issues and you should visit an emergency dentist to address the bleeding and prevent complications.

4. Tissue Injuries

If you accidentally injure your lips, cheeks, or tongue and it is causing significant pain and bleeding, you should visit an emergency dentist near you. Our Surrey Hills dentists can help you to assess and treat this injury quickly and painlessly.

5. Accidental Tooth Displacement

If one or many of your teeth have suddenly shifted out of their normal position, you should seek emergency dentistry. An emergency dentist can evaluate the situation and recommend appropriate treatment to prevent further damage and ensure your oral health.

Did you Know ?

Across a range of studies, the most common cause of dental trauma is due to accidents or sports injuries. That is consistent with what we see at the Surrey Hills Dentists clinic. While research indicates a higher demand for dental emergency treatment among young males, there’s also a notable increase in cases among young female clients.

Here is a list of most common dental emergencies

  1. Broken or dislodged teeth.
  2. Crown or bridges dislodged.
  3. Tooth internal infection that needs root canal treatment.
  4. Infected and swollen gums.
  5. Orthodontic Emergencies

While there are a number of cost-effective generic sports mouth guards available through general retail stores the suitability of these guards cannot be guaranteed since each mouth and array of teeth is different. For this reason, it is best to speak to your dentist about getting a custom-fitted mouthguard for your child.

In the case where a tooth becomes dislodged, if the tooth is an adult tooth then there is still a high chance of the tooth being saved if you can pick the tooth up by the crown, being careful not to touch the tooth root, and place the tooth back in the hole from where it became dislodged. If the tooth is dirty in any way then try rinsing it in either milk or saliva. And if the tooth cannot be inserted back into it original place then the life of the tooth can best be sustained by transporting it to your dentist immersed in milk or saliva.

It is important to get dental emergency treatment as soon as possible when trying to save a tooth that has been knocked out due to a traumatic incident. The best recommendation is to seek treatment within the space of 30 minutes. However, if this is not possible it has been observed that dislodged teeth have been properly repositioned even up to three hours after the trauma event.

If dental emergencies are left untreated, they can lead to more serious complications.
